Lenten Meditation based on Mark 1:12-13

Make yourself comfortable. Let yourself relax. Feel the tension in your neck and exhale it out. Roll your shoulders and let them relax as you deeply inhale and then exhale. Now breathe in deeply again and whisper Jesus as you exhale. Release your imagination now as we journey into the desert with Jesus.

The desert sands sweep across the arid land, forming funnels of earth that rise into the red sky. Jesus walks ahead, unaware of your presence. Hunger grips your stomach. The sun’s rays create a haze over the endless miles of sand. Heat waves rise on the crest of the distant hills. Jesus suddenly stops short, falling onto the hot sand. Carrying a small flask of water, you run to his side. He doesn’t seem to see you; he sits motionless. His lips are cracked and bleeding from the sun. Wet a small handkerchief with drops of precious life-giving water…. Press it against Jesus’ lips. He looks at you and for an instant he holds your hand to his lips…. But then the sky darkens. Ill winds blow. An image stands before you. Not a man, not a beast. His lips curved in a knowing smile. Jesus rises, pushing himself between you and this vision of temptation. You are an observer, nothing else. You are powerless to move or to make a decision.

A taunting voice of evil speaks, “If you truly are the son of God, tell these stones to become bread”.

Jesus wipes the particles of sand from his parched lips and replies, “Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God”.

Angered by this Satan wraps his arm around Jesus, whisking him away from harsh reality…..He takes Jesus to the highest point in the holy city, the Temple….You follow in the evil hurricane of promised destruction.

Satan leans close to the ear of Jesus, “If you are the Son of God,” he says, “throw yourself down”. With a hand on Jesus’ back, pushing, nudging toward the edge of the building, Satan continues, “For it is written: God will command his angels in all that concerns you, and they will lift you up in their hands so that you will not strike your foot against a stone. Jump, fool, jump!

Jesus, growing tired of this assault, answers, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.”

Angered by this rebuttal, Satan once again carries Jesus to the top of the highest mountain….Jesus stands near the crumbling edge of boulders eaten away by the sea and by time….Satan orders, “Look below. See all the kingdoms of the world and all of their splendor? All this I will give to you…..If you will bow down and worship me”….

Jesus peers far into the valley below and shakes his head, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written, Worship the Lord your God and serve him only”….

In failure and anger, Satan folds into the night sky.

Jesus crumples to his knees in prayer and exhaustion. Angelic beings now appear and embrace him in their outspread wings. You watch and wait until Jesus notices you crouched in the mountain grasses.

He smiles, rises and walks toward you, “Come my dear child, it is time to leave this place.” Feel his arm around your shoulders as he leads you down the mountainside, coming to rest near a small creek.

Watch the waters tumble to the valley below. Dip your hand into the cool waters. Feel the sudden spray that leaves droplets on your face.

Jesus presses hip lips into the bubbling creek. ” My friend, I too, am not without temptation. These things that you have seen today are no different than the temptation s the world offers you. I know that it is often hard to separate the world’s pleasures from the goodness of life.”

Jesus settles back, resting against the grassy slope. “The world teaches, ‘If it feels good, do it.” But the world offers only temporary joy while my Father offers life everlasting.”

“Know that I too have felt the cold sweat of fear and the pressure of decision. Turn to my Father for protection and guidance. Turn your face toward God, my child.”

Jesus stretches forward, taking your hands in his. Quietly hold his hands and look into his eyes. “What are those things that tempt your soul and body, my child, he asks. How can I help you?"

Look into your heart now. Then tell Jesus what temptations you find hardest to resist. Lay bare your innermost heart and soul. Continue holding his hands and tell him what you are going through. Let Jesus strengthen you. As you inhale, feel his strength filling your inmost being. Feel his peace coursing throughout your body. Rest now in the presence of your savior.

When you are ready, return to this time and place.

Let us pray:

Jesus, thank you for strengthening my spirit. Guide me through these 40 days of Lent. Help me to fast to pray, and to help those in need. Let this be a time of repentance and spiritual renewal that will bring me ever closer to your Sacred Heart. Amen

Forming a Core Team

We are forming a team of dedicated Adoration substitutes that would agree to be contacted during certain times of the day in case a scheduled adorer is unable to attend. This does not obligate you in any way to fulfill an hour at a moment's notice. It only gives us a list of contacts that agree to potentially fill an hour, if available, as per their willingness at that particular time.

We have had much trouble in the past maintaining a reliable list of substitutes. So this is a proposed solution to form a group of devoted people committed to seeing that the Lord is never left alone. why pray for others?

When hearing of the challenges faced by persons going through cancer treatment, we often find these stories upsetting, especially when the patient is of a younger age, or when a family member writes honestly about the thought of losing their loved one. If we choose to examine this reaction closely, we may observe our impulse is to turn away from words of sickness, end of life, or the struggles of the young and old. But Jesus knows He has to redirect us and show us where we can always find Him. If we follow Him, we watch how He passes by those who are secure, confident, and content with themselves. He heads right for the beaten down, suffering, sick, and outcast.

Jesus teaches us that it is the marginalized people of our community who are the most receptive to the message of the gospel because they have first hand experience in knowing how unable we are to live without God. When we avoid adversity, we sever the connection that begins towards the heart of Jesus by offering our helping hand. And what's worse in our refusal is we have rejected the even larger gift of grace returned by the recipient of our help; that which completes the exchange for both parties to willingly, lovingly, joyously accept the full Gift of God being offered.

Our parish women have stepped up to put their hands to work and are creating some truly beautiful items to help cheer up and comfort those facing health a crisis.

The ministry encompasses knitting, crochet, quilting and bead-making talents. If you would like to meet some very creative, friendly people - come join us. We welcome all levels from those seeking to learn a new skill to experienced crafters. All ages and genders can participate.

First Friday Prayer Vigil: a personal account

What kind of people stay up until 5 AM on a Friday night? Not the kind I would want to associate with, or so I thought. But when a friend told me about St. Peregrine Shrine’s First Friday all night prayer, I was intrigued. All night seemed like pretty extreme devotion. Even though I am always looking for new ways to deepen my faith, 8 hours of prayer sounded like a bit much to forgo a good night of sleep.

My first thoughts were I wasn’t sure if this type of devotion was for me, or if I’d even be able to handle staying up all night. Later, as I read some of the material on prayer vigils, I learned that everyone comes up with a long list of excuses, as to why they feel they can’t attend. I guess I like a challenge because I soon found myself making plans to try it out. I explained to my kids and my husband that I’d be gone all night. Even they were surprised at the idea, though they know how passionate I can be about my interests and devotions.

I didn’t know what to expect and I had only a vague idea of how the evening would go. As explained by my friend, I knew there would be about a dozen people, and that the vigil is always managed by Deacon Ron.

On Friday night, we began gathering quietly in the Shrine at about 9:00 pm. At 10:00 PM our leader announced we would begin by reciting the rosary. She passed out special prayer books that offered a detailed account of each mystery, a book created specially for all night prayer. I loved the long descriptions which shed much insight and meaning on both a personal and spiritual level. We took turns reading, which helped to keep us awake and alert.

Listening to the rosary being recited in the Shrine was extra special, not just because we were in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament, but also because the acoustics cause our voices to resonate in the most beautiful way. Our voices seemed to fill the whole chapel, into every corner, and all around us.

At midnight we walked over to the church Sacristan to have coffee and some shared snacks, as well as socialize for an hour. Although I was sleepy, having time to sit and eat with everyone was pleasant and invigorating. The hour went by quickly and we were back in the Shrine by 1 AM.

We sat in silent prayer for a little while, and then did more communal prayers from a specially provided folder. The prayers were similar to the rosary prayer but modified somewhat. Afterwards, we sat quietly again while anyone who so desired could go into the foyer of the Shrine and be prayed over with Deacon Ron. As another hour passed, we recited a few more prayers from the folder which again helped keep us awake by listening and participating.

Before I knew it, it was almost 5 AM. By then I felt really great. Although I was still sort of sleepy, I was feeling so elated despite having stayed up all night. I was on top of the world, in fact we all were. What a blessing to be able to be with the Lord, for an entire night, with other devoted people. It was a really amazing experience, one for which I am anxious to do again and again.

They say for every person that vigils with the Lord, 1000 souls will be saved. In my view, for that many people to be redeemed, missing out on one night of sleep was a small price. My only remorse is that I’ll have to wait another whole month.

Adorers Needed for Early Hours

Adorers are badly needed for the hours of 1:00 AM, 2:00 AM and 3:00 AM. There is currently no one scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday at 2:00 AM. These times may sound challenging but consider the peace and silence you will experience as you come to visit the Lord in these quiet hours.

Weekend adorers are also needed between 9:00 AM - 12:00 noon, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Dream Night Prom for Teens with Cancer

Candlelighters, Childhood Cancer Fondation of Southern AZ, will be hosting their 6th Annual Dream Night Prom for teens who are battling cancer.

The prom is a magical, healing experience for the teens that participate. It is a moment of normalcy from all the physical changes caused by treatment related to their cancer. It gives the teens a chance to experience some of the common social activities they often miss out on due to their illness, such as the Prom.

Help make their Prom night a dream come true - they are currently seeking donations of dresses for the girls, and/or cash to make the night spectacular. If you'd like to give to the cause, please leave donations in the Shrine office Monday or Friday 9:30am-12noon, or at the parish office in care of the Michelle. I will be mailing out the dresses no later then February 21, 2011.

Other handmade items may also be accepted as long as they were created in the spirit of prayer for patients and/or their families.

Specially trained volunteers are also available for one-on-one peer support. We will match you up with someone who has lived through a similar cancer experience; available to both patients and caregivers.

For spiritual support, please come by and pick up our special prayer packet which includes material on St. Peregrine, the patron saint of cancer patients, and the other saints featured in the shrine. Plus you'll receive a medal, prayer cards, a rosary and more.

Stretching Out-Reach

Director, Co-founder and designer of the St. Peregrine Shrine, Melissa Veselovsky, continual extends her reach to help those afflicted with cancer.

She is currently working full-time at the Ironwood Cancer and Research Center. She is a patient navigator at Ironwood, where she provides non-clinical support to patients by offering them peer support through the American Cancer Society LINC program (which she created and co-founded), free supplies and services, as well as program connections that assist on a psycho-social level.

Melissa continues to be an important innovator in the Valley by reaching out to cancer patients through the creation of unique programs that address unmet needs. We all indebted to her for the mission and creation of this beautiful shrine.

Anointing of the Sick

The anointing is available to anyone who is about to undergo major surgery, is elderly and in a weakened condition, those suffering from mental illness, or for sick children. The person need not be dangerously ill to receive the sacrament. Anointing of the Sick is offered every month, on the first Monday, right after 8 AM mass. Parishioner Celebrates Recovery

Patty Coy makes the news when Christ the King second graders sign her head in celebration of her cancer recovery. Prayers from kids, friends and family at CtK have been answered as Patty gets word she is currently free of cancer. Patty is involved at the St. Peregrine Shrine leading our prayer group. She also offers peer support, through our LINC program, to others who are recently diagnosed, in hopes they will find the comfort she has found from prayer and in visiting the shrine.

Last month, church secretary Anny Sanchez was diagnosed with breast cancer and just five days ago, Anny had a double mastectomy. Her journey is one of faith and hope.

Anny is a 54-year old mother of 2 adult children. She had always been diligent in performing breast self exams but had never had a routine mammogram. She found a hard painful lump in her right breast and contacted her doctor right away.

The doctor sent her for a mammogram and a diagnostic ultrasound. The mammogram and the ultrasound revealed that there was also a lump in her other breast and that the first lump was very suspicious for cancer and almost certainly involved the lymph nodes. A needle biopsy was done and it confirmed Anny's worst fear... cancer.

Anny was scared! She didn't know what to expect or what to do next. It seemed that everyone had a different opinion on what she should do. It became clear that the "right" answer was going to be what was best for her. For Anny, it was the decision to have a double mastectomy, also called a "bilateral mastectomy" - an operation in which a surgeon would remove both of her breasts. Almost immediately after being diagnosed, Anny was surrounded by friends that offered their own personal experience with cancer as a source of hope and encouragement. Gradually the fear dissolved and the hope and faith of people around her filled her with joy. Her faith in God was strengthened and she started to pray for a miracle. On the evening before her surgery, Anny noticed that the lump felt a little smaller. She wasn't sure if it was her imagination or not, but it felt different to her. She prayed for healing. A friend prayed with her and laid her hands on her in prayer. Together they prayed that the doctors would remove all of the cancer and that the lymph nodes would be clear. She told God that with Him she could handle the mastectomy and the changes that came with it. She would bear this cross lovingly. They asked St. Peregrine to pray for her. When Anny awoke from surgery, her prayers had been answered! The doctors had removed all of the cancer and the lymph nodes were negative. Anny continues to recuperate from surgery and hopes to use her story to encourage others, especially Hispanic women, to get a mammogram.

Cancer Resource Center offers help

The Cancer Resource Center, located inside the new St. Peregrine Shrine, assisted one of our first patients last week.

After receiving a call from a patient wanting to obtain a wig from the Center, she was encouraged to come in and select a style from the choices available. When the patient arrived that same morning, she was able to pick out a wig she liked, plus was she was given other helpful items such as a special prayer shawl (created by volunteers who pray for the recipient as they knit the shawl), a St. Peregrine medal, and extensive printed material to take home, from the American Cancer Society. The patient spoke to a trained volunteer who was able to provide peer support, and then took a tour of the Chapel, which included viewing the Wailing Wall that contains prayer notes visibly tucked into the wall.

When expressing a desire to receive the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick, the director of the Shrine, Melissa Veselovsky, was able to locate Fr. Peter who administered the sacrament on the spot. She received Father's blessing and was anointed with oil.

Before completing her visit, the patient was moved to pray with the relic of St. Peregrine, located in the Resource center, as well as offer her prayers in the Shrine before the sacred Host. She affirmed that the Shrine was a beautiful, healing place that gives peace to those in need of support before, during and after treatment.

The Cancer Resource Center provides supplies for cancer patients, including head coverings, wigs, booties, prayer shawls, printed material, plus emotional and spiritual support to all patients and family members, all offered free of charge.

A Reflection by a Cancer Ministry Volunteer

Since the opening of the chapel, committed adorers have come to sit all hours of the day and night. It is quite impressive to know that over 400 people have signed up to adore Him for one hour, once a week.

Visiting with Jesus every week, is a powerful experience. You cannot come in with your troubles and leave with same state of mind. The effects of his presence are profound and cannot be easily dismissed. Although we say “Yes” to Jesus at weekly mass, being before him in the Chapel is a different kind of feeling. Sometimes it is overwhelming.

Immediately upon entering, I can sense His spirit fill the air. My eyes become transfixed on the spectacular monstrance before me. He seems to pierce my very soul at the moment of entry, pulling out all my emotions, even ones I don’t even know I have. It’s not always easy being before the King. He seems to expose my very heart; not for my own humiliation, but for His healing touch.

We may enter this place with broken lives and flowing tears, but we know He has been waiting for us with endless Love, Comfort and Joy – Peace comes from Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

St. Peregrine Laziosi

Peregrine Laziosi was born in Forli, Italy, in the year of 1265.

During his days as a young man, Peregrine was so opposed to the papacy that he struck St. Philip Benezi, who was a representative of Pope Martin IV, with his fist. In his humility, Philip offered Peregrine his other cheek to strike. This moved Peregrine so much that he apologized and vowed to change his life. Peregrine followed through by joining the Friar Servants of Mary and soon after, he became a monk.

Known for preaching, holiness, penance, and devotion to the sick and poor, Peregrine would stand in prayer for hours as an act of contrition. The physical stress of standing for such long periods caused him to develop varicose veins, which may have been what led to the development of cancer in his leg.

Peregrine’s leg cancer worsened to the point of requiring amputation by the time he reached 60 years of age. The night before the surgery was to be performed, he prayed both for God’s healing, and the grace to accept God’s will whatever the outcome. Peregrine then fell asleep at the cross, which led him to experience a vision of the crucified Jesus coming down from the cross and touching his cancer-ridden leg. When he awoke shortly after, miraculously, the cancer was gone.

Peregrine lived 20 more years in service of Christ, dying in 1345. He was canonized by Pope St. Benedict XIII in 1726.

CANCER SHRINE TO OPEN IN MESA

First of its kind in Arizona

MESA, Ariz. – (November 6, 2009) The dedication of the St. Peregrine Shrine – Arizona’s first 24-hour Adoration Chapel devoted to serving families of all faiths affected by cancer will take place with Bishop Thomas Olmsted at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, November 14, 2009 at Christ the King Catholic Church, 1551 E. Dana Ave, Mesa.
The free standing 2,400 sq. foot gold-domed shrine will hold up to 70 people and will be open 24 hours a day for prayer. The shrine is devoted to serving families of all faiths affected by cancer and offers emotional and spiritual support, cancer resources, education, outreach, wigs, treatment supplies, and medical equipment loan all free of charge. Staffed by volunteers trained by the American Cancer Society, the shrine will ensure that families affected by cancer have support in all areas of their cancer journey.
“A cancer diagnosis can be very complicated. It may bring with it grief, changes in lifestyle and appearance, spiritual concerns, financial concerns, physical changes, and a great sense of powerlessness. The shrine wants to help families affected by this disease cope with the diagnosis and everything that comes with. We fully expect miracles here.” said Shrine Director, Melissa Veselovsky.
Veselovsky’s words are echoed by a National Cancer Institute study on spirituality and cancer care that found “spiritual and religious well-being may be associated with improved quality of life in the following ways: reduced anxiety, depression, and discomfort; better adjustments to the effects of cancer and its treatment; increased ability to enjoy life during cancer treatment; feeling of personal growth as a result of living with cancer; and improved health outcomes.”
“If we can help people cope with cancer by supporting them emotionally and spiritually – we should see more people surviving cancer.”
The St. Peregrine Chapel is named after St. Peregrine Laziosi, a thirteenth-century monk that was miraculously healed from cancer.

St. Therese of Lisieux Window

The second stained glass window to be installed in the chapel (by Utopian Studios) was St. Therese of Lisieux. St. Therese, also called "The Little Flower", was born in France on January 2, 1873. She was a determined and strong-willed child. Therese's mother died of breast cancer when Therese was only 4 years old. Therese's sisters became mothers to her and each went on to join the Carmelite order when they came of age. Therese shared their desire for vocation at an early age. In 1887 her indomitable spirit was evident when she had the courage to beg the pope for acceptance into the order even though she had been forbidden to speak to him. She entered the Carmelite order in 1888. St. Therese suffered from illness and had periods of time when she felt isolated from the Lord. Through her own suffering and struggle, she came to realize that trusting in Jesus was the path to holiness and that making small daily sacrifices was the way to His Sacred Heart. St. Therese knew the pain of losing her mother from cancer, her father from stroke, and several Carmelite Sisters from influenza. St. Therese died after a long struggle with tuberculosis on September 30, 1897.

St. Padre Pio Window Installed

A couple of weeks ago, the first stained glass window designed by Utopian Studios of Mesa, AZ was installed in the chapel. The incscription on the window reads "St. Padre Pio of Pietrelcina. Although his name is technically "St. Pio", he is known affectionately to most as "Padre Pio" so the decision was made to place "Padre" in the inscription. St. Padre Pio was born in Petrelcina, Italy on May 25, 1887. He had an extraordinary call to holiness and consecrated his life to God at the age of five. He joined the Capuchin Friars at age 15 and was ordained to priesthood at age 23. Padre Pio prayed almost continuously and was known for contemplation and simple prayer. Although Padre Pio suffered from physical and spiritual afflictions, he worked 19 hour days and denied himself vacation time. He was blessed with many spiritual gifts such as healing, bilocution, stigmata, and reading people's hearts. He saw Christ in those who suffer - such as the sick and the poor. He encouraged his followers to "Bring God to all those who are sick. This will help them more than any other remedy." He knew what it meant to bear the burden of a loved one - as he bore the stigmata - the physical wounds of Christ. He died on September 23, 1968.

St. Anne's Cancer Ministry Coordinator Dies

Last Thursday, Healing Through the Body of Christ Cancer Ministry Volunteer Coordinator for St. Anne's Catholic Church in Gilbert, lost her battle with cancer. Debbie Bond was an incredible volunteer and an inspiration to people faced with a cancer diagnosis. Despite enduring treatments for Stage IV Breast Cancer for almost four years, Debbie worked tirelessly to improve the lives of people affected by cancer. An engraved brick will be placed at the chapel as a permanent reminder of the love and compassion that she showed for others. We have no doubt that she will have the best seat in the house for the dedication of the chapel in November. A funeral Mass will be held at St. Anne's Catholic Church in Gilbert on Thursday, July 23, 2009 at 11am.

The 2nd Annual St. Peregrine Charity Golf Tournament, hosted by the Knights of Columbus and Christ the King, was held on Saturday, May 2, 2009 at the Arizona Golf Resort in Mesa, AZ. Our sponsors: Fiat HVAC, DBR Electric, Arizona Watertite Systems Roofing, and Tim's Auto Group helped make our event a great success and we raised almost $6,000 for the chapel! Pilgrimages

We often get questions from people wanting to know more about making a pilgrimage. We believe that a pilgrimage can be very healing. The trip, however, is not always so much about the final destination as it is about the journey itself. It can be a metaphor for our relationship with God. Often times people travel to specific destinations believing that if only he or she could get to the site - a healing will occur - such as a cure from cancer. The problem, though, is that often times the miracle that the person was hoping for does not occur and faith is lost instead of gained. In many cases, the journey was what was important but the person missed it because he or she was fixated on the final destination. There is nothing wrong with believing that God will heal us but it is important to remember that it is God that determines what healing will occur - not us. When we ignore the journey, we ignore the call from God to really come to Him. If we get to a Holy site and expect a miracle without opening ourselves up completely to Him, we are often disappointed or fail to see the real miracles. God loves us completely and without reservation. We must be diligent in our quest for closeness to Him - even in the midst of our stress and sorrow. God uses our pilgrimages as an opportunity for us to grow closer to Him just as we are getting closer to a certain site. When we get to the site, we should honor God and allow Him to guide us rather than trying to tell God what He should do for us. It is vital that we seek spiritual healing for those are the miracles that stay with us through eternity. Physical healing lasts only as long as our earthly bodies. When visitors come to the St. Peregrine Chapel, we want them to be active participants - praying, seeking, and opening up their hearts. There really are miracles - and they happen every day.

Exciting News:
We had our first "pilgrims" to the shrine this week. On Thursday, we welcomed a group from Houston, Texas. Even though the chapel is not open yet, our cancer ministry was ready to help them on their cancer journey. It is our hope that they felt comforted and loved. It was an honor and a privilege to have met them and we look forward to seeing them again.

Now that construction is nearing completion, the team has been discussing the final plan for the landscape around the chapel. Initially, the idea was to have some type of cross pattern made up of the engraved bricks in a path leading up to the doors of the chapel. We have since come to realize that a cross pattern may not be the best solution. First, the location of the chapel doors is perpendicular to the walkway to the main church. No matter which way we looked at it, it could be perceived as facing the wrong way. Was West or South the right way? Secondly, we wanted to tie the landscape plan of the chapel into a new master plan for the landscape of the entire campus. We know that we want to continue to offer the engraved bricks to people to memorialize someone they love and/or show their support after the chapel is built so after thinking, researching, sketching, and standing in the space and thinking some more, we came up with an alternate plan. With the idea that cancer is a journey, we came up with a design featuring a curved garden path. We discovered several advantages to the pathway: 1. More bricks could be added than the cross pattern and the blank bricks would be easier to remove and replace with engraved ones. 2. It encourages people to walk the path and use it as a mediation and metaphor for their own journeys. 3. It helps people to be a part of the garden - rather than just an outsider looking in. 4. The path will curve around and also lead to the main church. 5. There will be benches and grassy areas so that people can socialize or find a quiet place to sit. 6. We are going to place a substantial crucifix in the chapel and it seemed like we were using the cross motif too many times in a very small area (in the pathway, on the dome, on the exterior walls of the chapel, on an interior door in the church, on the interior walls, and then a very large crucifix on the wall inside).
As we revised the path, we also looked very carefully at the plants. Except for the small areas of grass, all of the plants that we chose were listed as drought tolerant - low water use plants so that we can conserve water. We chose plants that were easy to maintain, had low litter, smelled good, and looked pretty. We have an area on the west side of the chapel reserved for a Native American garden. This will be designed with the input of the American Indian tribes in Arizona. There is a huge need for cancer support in their communities and we want them to feel comfortable coming to us if they need us. Take a look at the designs and let us know what you think. We even added a pot of Chocolate Flowers near the chapel doors so that people wouldn't have to bend over to smell their chocolate scent. (And yes, it is true - there really is a flower called the Chocolate Flower - and it really does smell like chocolate - and it is native to Arizona!) The cross went on the chapel this morning as scheduled and the gold metal for the dome was placed shortly after. Workers hoisted the 8ft cross with a crane and fastened it to a specially constructed steel plate at the top of the dome.

Big Day Tomorrow

We got word earlier today that the 8ft gold cross will be placed on the top of the chapel tomorrow. The crane will arrive at 7am and the cross will be placed atop the dome sometime before 8am. The gold metal on the dome will be placed sometime tomorrow after the cross is placed. It is an exciting development as tomorrow is Good Friday. Such an appropriate day to add such an incredible symbol of our faith.

It is a beautiful day in Mesa today. The sky is blue and the air is slightly breezy. I walked over to the chapel today and marvelled at how amazing it is to be involved in such a great project. I see it sitting solidly on consecrated ground and imagine that it is waiting patiently for the opportunity to serve.

Stained Glass

There are four stained glass windows planned for the chapel: St. Padre Pio, St. Therese of Lisieux, St. Philomena/St. John Vianney, and St. Luke. I will go into more detail on the lives of the saints and why they were chosen in future blogs. The stained glass is being custom-made by Utopian Studios in Mesa, AZ. We are blessed to be able to have one of the finest stained glass artists in the country, J.R. Lupkin (shown in picture), design and paint the glass. He started his work in stained glass art and fabrication in 1959 and graciously agreed to come out of retirement to work on our windows. His work can be seen online at http://www.utopianstudios.com/ as well as St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in Tucson and St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church in Phoenix (voted best church interior by the Arizona Republic in 2008). The picture shows Mr. Lupkin next to the scale drawing of our St. Padre Pio window. We wanted the windows designed with meaningful images and symbolism. For example, when you see each window, there will be an element of water in each one, symbolizing the cleansing water of baptism. The top of each window will have the cross and Eucharist to symbolize that healing comes through the body of Christ. Only one of the saints was verified to be a martyr and that window will be the only one with clouds in it. It is exciting to see the windows "come to life". Mr. Lupkin and Utopian Studios are very precise in their work and we have no doubt that the windows will be exquisite. Pews

The search for pews has been an adventure and quite an education. Did you know that simple wood pews can cost in excess of $1,500 per 4ft of bench? And that does not include kneelers ,book racks, installation, or delivery! It has been suggested that we obtain discarded pews from churches that are remodeling and use them to save money. We definitely looked into that option but the results were discouraging. It seems that many churches are discarding used upholstered pews. They are moving away from upholstered pews because of the cost of upkeep and often poor quality of the materials underneath the padding. According to pew manufacturers, padded pews have cheaper wood underneath the padding because it won't be seen. We have selected unpadded pews so that we will not have the cost and worry of cleaning and maintaining padded pews. In addition, the solid wood pew has the potential to last the entire life of the chapel whereas the padded pew or its fabric may need to be replaced in time. The solid wood pews will be easier to keep clean for the many visitors that may have compromised immune systems. If we find that visitors would like some extra padding, we can provide individual seat pillows for people to borrow. When we found discarded solid wood pews, the cost of refinishing them was quite high and often times the style did not fit the architecture of our chapel. The decision was made to take the time to raise the money for the pews, find a furniture maker that could give us the best price, and do it right the first time. April Update

As you can see by the pictures, it is getting exciting! The first picture is a view from the main entrance - just as you enter the chapel. A bathroom will be on the left and an office on the right. The other doors are for electrical and plumbing areas. The next interior views is from the sanctuary. The domed area will be directly above the altar. The third interior photo shows the view from the altar looking out through the double sets of doors to the entrance. The final photo shows the exterior of the chapel and workers constructing the cross decorations. We are trying to finish construction by Easter. This means that the structure will be complete and the chapel will be a safe building. This does not mean, however that we will be ready for visitors. There will not be any pews, stained glass, statuary, altar, woodwork or other furnishings in the chapel. Church furnishings are quite expensive and we still need donations to pay for them. We are searching out the most cost effective solutions but do not have the funds to pay for all of them. I will discuss specific items in future postings.

Catching Up

Here are some pictures from the last few months to give you an idea of our progress.

The walls of the chapel are made of foam forms filled with concrete (ICF or Insulated Concrete Forms). The diocese takes buildings such as ours very seriously. We were required to build it of brick & mortar or stone. ICF is very energy efficient and less expensive than brick, so the diocese encouraged us to use it for our structure. As a result, the chapel will be strong, cool, and quiet. In addition, we placed all of the air conditioning duct work under the floor to minimize noise and maximize cooling in the 110+ degree summers.

We have come a long way in a short amount of time. The picture below was taken only 3 months later.

Today is the first day of the St. Peregrine Chapel Blog. It's purpose is to educate and inform people on the progress of construction and the activities related to the St. Peregrine Chapel & Shrine. The St. Peregrine Chapel is one of those extraordinary projects that is clearly a work of the Holy Spirit. If you have ever wanted to watch God's work happen right before your eyes - take a look at the chapel. The Holy Spirit has been at hand since the plans were drawn. Every path that has been taken was the work of the Lord. As the project unfolds it becomes more and more clear that God is guiding the work, not man.
Construction is going very well and the trusses for the dome were placed last week. There is a possibility that the 8ft gold cross will be placed this weekend. The dome will be gold in color when it is finished and we should see those panels going on in about 3 weeks.
A display was created at the back of the church so parishioners can see the design choices that we have made for the chapel. We still need funds to pay for the pews, statuary, stained glass, landscape, etc. Donations can be made online at http://www.cancershrine.org/
